We’re thrilled to announce that this September, Doctors Without Walls will be moving into a brand-new space that’s bigger, better, and brimming with potential at 1528 Chapala Street! After many years in our original office, we’re getting an exciting upgrade: 500 additional square feet, a more functional layout, and a location that brings us even closer to the heart of the community we serve.
The story of how we first met our new building is already one for the books. During a trial run to see if our tall van would fit into the covered parking garage, our one and only Maggie Sanchez reports accidentally setting off the fire alarm with the roof of the van just brushing the ceiling-mounted detector. Within seconds, tenants streamed out with laptops, folders, and important paperwork in hand, unsure of what was going on. Standing among them, Maggie waved her hands and called out with a smile, “There’s no fire!” The moment of confusion quickly turned into laughter and relief as everyone realized it was just a case of van vs. ceiling sensor.
In the midst of the unexpected evacuation, we were introduced to our new neighbors. We’ll be sharing the building with a dynamic group of other mission-driven nonprofit organizations including the United Boys & Girls Club, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and SB ACT. It was a chaotic first impression, but a memorable one that reminded us: DWW always arrives with a bang!
For the first time, we’ll have dedicated offices and conference rooms, giving our volunteers and staff room to collaborate, hold meetings simultaneously, and maintain the privacy needed for more sensitive work. Our dedicated teams will finally have a calm and quiet space to complete their paperwork and make phone calls without background chatter and noise. And with an air-conditioned medical room, we’ll continue to be equipped to store and prepare essential supplies while keeping our patients’ comfort and safety a top priority.
The new office also comes with a kitchen and breakroom, offering our volunteers and staff a cozy place to take a breather, refuel, and connect between shifts. We are happy to create a more supportive environment that nurtures not only the people we serve, but the people doing the serving.
One of our most exciting upgrades includes parking. Anyone who’s visited our old office knows the struggle of our famously limited two-space parking situation. Now, we’ll have ample parking that will make day-to-day operations smoother and more accessible for everyone involved: staff, volunteers, patients, and community partners alike.
This move marks a huge milestone for DWW and shows how much we’ve grown and how much more we aim to do. As we settle into our new home, we remain deeply committed to our mission of providing compassionate, street-based care to Santa Barbara’s most vulnerable. And now, we’ll have the space to grow and dream even bigger.
