As we look back on 2024, we at Doctors Without Walls – Santa Barbara Street Medicine (DWW) are filled with gratitude and inspiration for the incredible outreach opportunities we’ve had this year. From connecting with young changemakers to forging new partnerships, this year has been a testament to the power of community, compassion, and collaboration.

Empowering the Next Generation at Orcutt Academy High School

One of the most inspiring moments of the year was our visit to Orcutt Academy High School, where we had the honor of presenting to MedLife, a chapter dedicated to medicine, education, and development for low-income families everywhere. These passionate students are carrying forward MedLife’s mission by raising awareness and preparing to embark on a medical volunteer trip to Cusco, Peru, in summer 2025.

During our presentation, we explored the homelessness crisis in the U.S. and Santa Barbara County, addressing misconceptions and fostering a deep sense of empathy. We also shared the impactful work that DWW does locally, encouraging students to think about how they can create meaningful change both abroad and in their own backyard.

A heartfelt thank you to the MedLife students at Orcutt Academy High School for your curiosity, compassion, and commitment to helping others. You are the future of compassionate care, and we can’t wait to see the amazing things you’ll achieve.

Celebrating Community at Plaza Palooza

DWW was thrilled to participate in the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Plaza Palooza, celebrating the grand opening of their newly renovated public space. This vibrant event was a reminder of the library’s vital role as a community hub where people connect, learn, and grow together.

Throughout the day, we had the privilege of meeting wonderful community members, sharing our mission to support Santa Barbara’s unsheltered population, and strengthening relationships with other local organizations. Perhaps the most touching moments came when former patients stopped by to thank us for being there in their times of need.

A special thank you to the Santa Barbara Public Library for including us in this beautiful celebration and for the ongoing partnership we share. Together, we’re making a difference by supporting our mutual clients with resources like healthcare connections, essential documents, internet access, and social services. The library also provides a safe and welcoming space for clients to access essential services such as enrollment in social services, and assistance with housing and healthcare applications. These invaluable resources allow us to work together toward a more connected and supportive community for all.

A Groundbreaking Partnership with CenCal Health

This year also marked the beginning of an exciting new partnership between DWW and CenCal Health as part of the California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM) initiative. Together, we are working to provide enhanced care management and address social determinants of health for people with complex health and social needs.

Through this partnership, we’re proud to offer services such as:

  • Enhanced Care Management: Providing members with a dedicated care team to help them receive medical care and secure housing.
  • Community Supports: Addressing critical needs like homelessness and unstable housing through 14 specialized services.
  • Companion Care: Matching trained student volunteers with individuals experiencing homelessness to help them attend medical appointments and navigate the healthcare system.

CenCal Health, a public entity that administers Medi-Cal in Santa Barbara County, has been an invaluable partner in our mission. Together, we’re ensuring that even the most vulnerable members of our community receive the care and support they deserve.

A Community of Compassion and Hope

As 2024 draws to a close, we are reminded of the incredible power of collaboration and the strength of our Santa Barbara community. From high school students with dreams of making a global impact to new partnerships that expand our reach, this year has been a testament to the good we can achieve together.
