Evelyn Sanchez is more than a dedicated volunteer. She is a shining example of what it means to serve with heart, humility, and hope. Since joining DWW just over a year ago, Evelyn has become an indispensable member of our team. Whether serving as a Companion Care volunteer or assisting with our Enhanced Care Management (ECM) team, Evelyn consistently goes above and beyond, not only fulfilling her role, but truly embodying the spirit of compassionate, patient-centered care.
Turning Experience into Impact
Fluent in Spanish and deeply attuned to the needs of Santa Barbara’s unhoused and undocumented populations, Evelyn offers a rare and powerful form of connection that transcends language barriers and institutional distrust. She brings a profound sense of empathy to her work, rooted in lived experience. Growing up in Santa Barbara as an undocumented individual, Evelyn has an intimate understanding of the systemic and emotional challenges many of our patients face. Rather than distancing herself from those difficult realities, she has channeled them into a powerful mission to serve.
Her ability to connect with anyone, regardless of background, circumstance, or state of mind, is remarkable. At clinics, Evelyn is known not only for her reliability and professionalism, but for her warmth. She takes time to speak with every patient, check in on volunteers, and build bridges wherever she goes. It’s not uncommon to find her sitting beside a patient for an extended conversation, gently holding space for their stories with grace and dignity.
Recipient of the 2025 Father Jon Humanitarian Award
This year, in recognition of her extraordinary impact, Evelyn was named the recipient of the 2025 Father Jon-Stephen Hedges Humanitarian Award, one of the highest honors DWW can bestow. Established in 2021, this award honors volunteers who exemplify the values and compassionate service that Father Jon embodied throughout his life, from ministering to the homeless to responding to national tragedies like 9/11. Evelyn carries forward this legacy with every act of kindness and every moment of connection she fosters on the streets.
A Future in Medicine, Rooted in Purpose
Outside of her volunteer work, Evelyn recently achieved another significant milestone: graduating from UC Santa Barbara. Balancing her academic pursuits with her service to DWW speaks to her extraordinary discipline and drive. Evelyn plans to pursue a career in medicine as the next chapter of her journey, one we are confident she will navigate with the same passion, resilience, and heart that have already inspired so many. Her unwavering commitment to justice, community health, and human dignity will no doubt continue to leave a lasting impact wherever she goes.
